Yerevan State Medical University

Introduction

Yerevan State Medical University is one of the leading Government Medical University in Eastern Europe. It was founded in 1919 as a faculty and established as an independent Institution in 1930. The University is enlisted in the Directory of Higher Medical Institutions adopted by the World Health Organization (WHO). YSMU is a State non-commercial instutution under the Ministry of Education and Science.

YSMU is recognized by the Medical Council of India, Act of 1956 (Gazette of India, Part II, S.1, Extra, S. No. 83, dt. 31.12.1956). Indians batches are regularly been admitted in this University since 1987. YSMU is a member of the International Association of Universities, which gives great opportunity in the sphere of development of international relations, students exchange, probation period abroad, participation in grant programs under the aegis of UNESCO joint research work and conferences. Having firm structure the university has worked out and implemented educational and research programs, for which it has gained international acknowledgement. YSMU established direct partnership in the form of extensive cooperation with about 30 universities around the globe, including a number of leading universities such as Boston University, Columbia University, Philadelphia University, etc. in USA and many other universities of Europe. In the framework of these cooperation agreements, various academic programs, student exchange and joint research activities are implemented. After completing the second year of medical school, the students who perform well can participate in the Medical Scientific works of the ‘Scientific Research Centre’ of the university. The university has trained over 30,000 doctors and pharmacists for nearly a century long existence.

Currently, over 162 Doctor of Sciences and 481 Ph.D. degree holders constitute the university faculty of 1100 Professors. 264 members of the university faculty hold Scientific degrees, 7 Academicians of RA National Academy of Sciences conduct scientific and academic workings in the University. 80 Professors of Medicine, 171 Associate Professors and 6 Senior Research Officers are enrolled in the university teaching, scientific and clinical activities.

Yerevan State Medical University is one of the most popular destinations for medical education in Europe, with over 900 Indian students presently pursuing their studies there. Students from more than 40 countries are at the advantage to complete their graduation from this University. Currently, there are about 5,500 students enrolled in the studies at seven faculties of Yerevan State Medical University after M. Heratsi; 1140 of them coming from different countries of the world.

Administration

YSMU is a Government University functioning under the Ministry of Science and Education as a state non-commercial organization. The structure of the University is that of a traditional European University. The governing bodies of the University are the University Council, the Rector, the Senate and the Student Council. The highest body of the University governing is the Board comprised of 32 members. The highest administrative organ is the University Council, which convenes at least twice a year. The Council makes decisions about the main activities of the University. The Rectorate of the University controls the way the decisions are realized during the intervals between the University Council sessions. The hospitals, clinics and centers are involved in the University Council of Clinics. The Rector of YSMU carries out the direct control of the University Council, the Rectorate and the Board of Clinics. Administration and the faculty function collaboratively in accordance with the University’s regulations and laws. The overwhelming majority of University’s leadership comprises of highly qualified physicians and health care professionals having an excellent and lifelong experience as well as expertise in the relevant field of study. The faculty staff and the University employees jointly collaborate for the common goals to be achieved at best.

Infrastructure

YSMU has more than 15 specialized hospitals with the latest apparatus, equipments and monitors where medical students are well trained. They are given an opportunity to provide competent medical services to the public as well as to carry out practical research work. International students also familiarize in different specialized clinics with outpatient services as well as more complicated cases in the concerned departments. This outpatient clinic provides medical care to paediatric and adult population. Family physicians provide the medical care bringing forward narrow specialized and laboratory-diagnostic services. There also exists the service of speech therapist, as well as a physiotherapeutic cabinet. RA Genetic Centre is located at the “Muratsan” University Outpatient clinic, where diagnostic and dispensary control of hereditary diseases is maintained.

Apart from the above mentioned facilities and services, Yerevan State Medical University owns certain clinical bases/platforms structured into medical centers and hospitals.

Memberships

The World Health Organization recognizes YSMU as the only state medical university of the Republic of Armenia. The University is included in the World Directory of Medical Schools. YSMU is globally recognized by the medical councils of different countries. The University has established various contacts with medical schools and healthcare institutions of several countries and international organizations in the areas of medical education and healthcare.

Library

The medical library of the University is one of the richest libraries. The textbooks and professional literature are replenished by works authored by the University faculty; manuals are also obtained from overseas countries In addition, specific research journals and magazines are regularly obtained. The library has two sterling halls, one of which is equipped with computers having free access to University’s online educational resources to be used by students, residents, researchers and faculty members. These computers, as well as computers at other halls are gateways to international research resources, such as Up-to-date, Hinari, Ovid-SP. The University covers the resource-related expenses, respectively. Medical librarians provide assistance and consultation recommending resources for individual and group research.
